Our country's history is complex.  And by that I mean that while we are capable of and have achieved wonderous things, we have also done a lot of horrible things to a lot of people, including to our own citizens.  The doctrine of "separate but equal" is an example of the latter.  The immense volume of lost hopes, dreams, and potential due to this doctrine is heartwrenching.  While no words can undo those inumerable injustices, this decision (and indeed, this phrase) was the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back and led to integration across our great(?), well, complex, land!
